The Book of Proverbs

The book of Proverbs is one of the most profound and yet strikingly simple books of the Bible. Solomon fills this book with practical advice for those of us that want to do something great. This is why it is a good commitment for us as Christians to read Proverbs every day.

First, let's take a look at chapter 1, verse 2: To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding." This is the "Mission Statement" for Proverbs as a whole, which is why it would be a good idea to read proverbs every day. Verse 5 says, "A wise man will hear, and increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain to wise counsel." Let's take a look at some wise counsel.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths," Proverbs 3:56. I don't know how many times I have quoted this verse to myself, or the times God has brought it to mind while I'm pondering an upcoming decision. I've come to know that no matter what the situation is, if I'll just trust in Him, He'll show me what to do. Proverbs 4:18 promises, "But the past of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day."

One of the principles brought out repeatedly is that of sowing and reaping. Proverbs 6:6-8 advises, "God to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provides her meat in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest." Here, Solomon alludes to an animal his audience is quite familiar with, and uses it to show them the importance of diligence in the proper season. "He that gathers in summer is a wise son; but he that sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame." This is the counsel of Proverbs 10:5.

Proverbs 31:3 warns, "Give not your strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroys kings." This passage is telling young men to devote their time and energy to the right places, and hey, Solomon ought to know.

I can't urge you more strongly to study Proverbs daily. In the world we live in, it's easy to get off track, and we know a companion of fools will be destroyed. So be wise and attain to wise counsel daily. Grow deeper with God, and reach out to those around you.
